The crash, which took place around 2:10 p.m. Sunday near the Main Street exit in Trumbull, closed the northbound lanes of the highway for more than two hours as police from surrounding towns, including Bridgeport, Trumbull, and Fairfield, helped direct traffic, said Connecticut State Police.
Trooper Kelly Grant said the chain reaction crash occurred when traffic began to slow and vehicles one through six crashed into the rear of each other, sending one spinning and another down an embankment where it struck a tree.
Five people were transported to area hospitals with minor injuries, Grant said.
The driver of the last vehicle was issued a ticket for traveling too closely.
